Watch Your Language! It Could Change Your Attitude

Hilo, Hawai‘i – November 8, 2019 – The non-profit Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center hosts a free talk on November 21 as part of their “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” Brown Bag Lunch Series. Talks are Third Thursdays from 12 noon to 1 pm in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney at 655 Kilauea Avenue in Hilo.

This month’s speaker is Jo Hittner on the topic “Watch Your Language! It Could Change Your Attitude.”

“Contemptuous language is all around us, and it’s easy to respond in a like manner,” says Dr. Hittner. “While disagreements are necessary for progress, listening and speaking respectfully is challenging when there is conflict. Our attitude toward the speaker affects many of our responses.”

In this talk, explore ways to use your language to effectively listen to others with an attitude of openness to differences.

Jo Hittner, Ph.D. has worked in the counseling/psychology field for nearly 40 years. She holds a doctorate in counseling from University of North Dakota, Grand Forks and teaches as adjunct faculty at Winona State University, Minnesota during the summers. Semi-retired, Dr. Hittner is a professionally trained volunteer mediator at Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center. Language and its effects are at the core of her beliefs in making the world a more peaceful place.

Ku‘ikahi’s Brown Bag Lunch Series is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, enjoy an informal and educational talk-story session, and meet others interested in “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace.”
