The Voodoo Glow Skulls, an American ska punk band, originated in Riverside, California in the late 1980s. Founded by brothers Frank, Eddie, and Jorge Casillas, their unique blend of punk, ska, and hardcore influences quickly distinguished them in the Southern California music scene. The band is renowned for their energetic live performances and a sound that fuses fast-paced punk rock with brass and ska elements, creating a vibrant, infectious rhythm.
Their journey began in their teenage years, where they honed their skills in backyard gigs and local venues. The Voodoo Glow Skulls gained a reputation for their DIY ethic and high-energy shows, which eventually led to their first album, “Who Is, This Is?” in 1993, a record that cemented their place in the burgeoning ska-punk scene.
The band’s name, a creative and quirky choice, reflects their eclectic and spirited approach to music. They continued to build their legacy with albums like “Firme” (1995) and “Baile de Los Locos” (1997), which showcased their ability to blend English and Spanish lyrics, reflecting their Mexican-American heritage. This bilingual approach broadened their appeal, allowing them to connect with a diverse audience.
The band’s influence extends beyond their music; they are often credited with helping to popularize the ska-punk genre, inspiring a new generation of musicians. With a career spanning over three decades, the Voodoo Glow Skulls continue to be a significant and dynamic force in the punk and ska scenes.
