Off Road Recreation And Relaxation — A Day Trip To Mana Road

Mana Road, Big Island Hawaiʻi

Are you looking for a place to enjoy some dirt driving and clear your mind on the Big Island? Where the air is so calm it feels as though time does not exist and the panoramic view is pure magnificence? Then pack up the ʻohana, prepare your cooler, make ensure your off-road toys are full of fuel, and head up to Mana Road.

You can access Mana Road from multiple points. One way to start your drive is off of Saddle Road via Mauna Kea Access Road. Other entries come in from Waimea. The topography is stunning and progresses from lush to barren landscapes so seamlessly that it will make you want more storage in your photo album.

We want to stress that although absolutely beautiful, driving Mana Road can be dangerous! A 4wd vehicle is needed and cell phone reception is very limited so do not attempt to navigate it without a good solid backup plan, a full tank of gas and a spare tire in good condition and stay on the road as best you can.

Mana Road is 42.9 miles long and sits at 7,293ft at its highest elevation. It is pastures, rolling green hills, cinder cones, plum orchards, huge hardened lava bombs, cattle, horses, Koa trees and so much more. This drive makes you let out all the stresses of the world with a big, muscle relaxing, “aaaahhhhh”.

Whether you are out for a mellow cruise, taking a wilder ride on your outdoor toy of choice, or just want to picnic, Mana Road is the perfect host.

With views of the summit of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, Hilo town, the Kona sunset paired with the moonrise, there are few (if any) places on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi that match its splendor.

We want to give you more information about the flora and fauna that is unique to this area so we will ask our friends at Three Mountain Alliance and various other wonderful organizations to elaborate in an article, so stay tuned!

For now, we are going to let the pictures do the driving and tell you that once you experience this place, you will feel differently.
