Akaka Falls Trail, Big Island Hawaii:
Viewing Akaka Falls is a must-do for both locals and visitors alike on the Big Island. The less than a half mile distance on the paved, circular trail will take you to the mighty free-falling 442 foot Akaka Falls.
Getting There:
Akaka Falls trail is located approximately 10 miles north of Hilo town. Off of Highway 19, turn off uphill on Akaka Falls Road between mile markers 13 and 14. Continue to drive about three miles up along the Akaka Falls Road. You will see plenty of signs guiding your way. You will pull up to a small parking lot where there is a $5 charge for visitors, and no parking fee for locals.
This trail is great for families, as most children are able to handle this less than half a mile trail. Be sure to stop by the quaint town of Honomu on your way to or from Akaka Falls and stop in the shops along the way. You will often times find fruit stands with fresh, tropical fruits to purchase from the island.
