Animal Rescues and Sanctuaries on the Big Island

For many of us, our animals are truly members of our family. From the time they first come into our homes until they take their final breaths, we love them, and they love us unconditionally. Sometimes, however, circumstances arise that require us to ask for help for our animals, to surrender them, or to rescue animals who have been abused or abandoned.

There are a number of resources available to help animals here on the Big Island, from large animal sanctuaries to mobile spay and neuter clinics, to animal rescues who help place animals with new families both here and on the Mainland. For Mainland transfers, several rescues and shelters partner with locals or visitors who are flying to locations where the animals are to be transferred or adopted, and they need people to be animal rescue flight volunteers to get these pets to those destinations.

And if you are in the enviable position of being able to offer a home, check out the pets available for fostering and adoption before you seek a pet from a breeder. Adopt, don’t shop. If you can, provide support for the entities below- they are always in need of donations. Reach out and find out how you can best support the animals they care for. Several rescues and shelters offer options to take dogs out for field trips or to foster dogs or cats in your home while they await adoption. Contact a rescue or shelter near you to find out more about these programs and other opportunities to volunteer.

Above all, remember that a pet is a lifelong commitment, not a holiday gift. They trust us to care and love them for their entire lifetime.
