I know it’s the unscientific and emotional part of my brain. The part that thinks something is true even without the scientific proof to back it up.
But am I the only one bothered by the county building a homeless shelter at the old hospital?
Don’t get me wrong. I understand that it really is a great way to use the facility but dangit…the place is haunted!
There I said it.
I’m not a superstitious guy and I’m not much of a believer in all the supernatural stuff…except when it comes to that place.
And while I’ve never experienced anything personally at that location, I have heard more than my share of stories from people who lived on the premises.
When I was very young, (8, 9, 10 years old) my dad worked as a maintenance man for the Job Corps when it was at the old hospital. I had no idea back then that people called it babies cry and that there was a dark history behind it I would go there with my mom to drop lunch off for my dad quite often. I always had an eerie, cold feeling walking in the building but it’s an old hospital. Of course, it’s gonna be eerie.
Many of the people in the job corps back then were from Micronesia so they also had no preconceived notion of babies cry when they arrived.
My dad had befriended many of the young men in the program and after they were out of the job corps, they remained friends of the family. They would sometimes come over and have a few drinks while listening to my dad’s skillful ukulele playing (for real, my dad could shred a uke).
They shared many stories about living in the old hospital but one story. Hearing footsteps and doors opening, and closing was a common occurrence according to them. But there was one story, in particular, that stayed with me all these years.
It was told by two men who were participants in the job corps program named Henry and Perlino (could’ve been Berlino).
Henry said that he was awakened by a baby crying (I know…it sounds cliché). But it didn’t come from outside like most other stories. He said he heard it coming from inside the building that he was living in.
It bothered him so much that he got up and walked down the hallway to try and find the source of the sound.
As he walked down the hallway, he started to hear more voices. When he reached the end of the corridor, he turned the corner into another hallway where a few other men were talking about how they couldn’t sleep because they heard a baby crying.
They searched for a while but never found the source of the crying. According to Henry, the crying happened every night for several nights and then it just stopped. He said that some of the people living there couldn’t take it and left. But many of the others had nowhere else to go.
It was one of those stories that stuck with me until today. Are we going to hear more of these kinds of stories now that the homeless shelter will be there? Who knows? But I’ve heard enough about that place to say…get your phones ready cause it’s about to get interesting.
