The Best Upcoming Big Island Events: Friday Aug. 23 to Wednesday Aug. 28

With the school year now in full effect, we hope all the ohana out there are taking some time this weekend to enjoy the upcoming events happening on our island.

This week we have a few exciting gatherings occurring from Kona to Hilo.

Head to the island’s west side for the 6th Annual Aunty Joy Keahi Mills Memorial Surf Day on Sat., Aug. 24 at Kahalu’u Beach Park. Support a good cause with the Tony Honda Kona benefit concert, fundraiser and car show for Keli’i, a local 13 year old battling cancer. Take the family to a car show at Kama’aina Motors in Hilo or see a horse show in Pana’ewa hosted by the Orchid Isle Horse Show Association on Sunday.

1- Friday Night Market in Hilo (Fri., Aug.23; 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Hilo): Every Friday night downtown Hilo comes alive at 69 Waianuenue Ave. where local bands, artists, food vendors and more share their creations with guests just like you. Visit this website to learn more.

2 6th Annual Aunty Joy Keahi Mills Memorial Surf Day at Kahalu’u Beach Park (Sat., Aug. 24; 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m., Kona): Surf Day is an annual free community outreach event that enables people with disabilities to access the beach and surf safely. The event is supported by Hawai’i County Ocean Safety, Professional Surf Instructors, the Hawaii County Fire Department, and volunteers from the Department of Education, Small Business Community Leaders and various non-profits. 3-Big Island Maker’s Market (Sat., Aug. 24; 12 p.m.- 6 p.m., Kona): Head to the Kona Brew Co.’s Brewing Block for some shopping and fun. This awesome event features hard-to-find items from local shops and vendors. Learn more on FB here.

4-2024 Labor Day Car Show (Sat., Aug. 24; 3 p.m.- 8 p.m., Hilo): Enjoy a car show in honor of the Big Island Auto Club’s 50th anniversary at Kama’aina Motors in Hilo. Check out the local racers and hear the roar of the cars. Learn more on FB here.

5-Kokua for Keli’i: Benefit Fundraiser at Tony Honda Kona (Sun., Aug. 25; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Kona): Time to kokua for a good cause Big Islanders – support local 13-year-old Keli’i and his family along their healing journey. Keli’i is described as a spirited local boy, born and raised on the Big Island with a strong connection to the community. Earlier this year, Keli’i was diagnosed with brain cancer and has since undergone two surgeries and chemotherapy. Despite the challenges, Keli’i is said to remain a trooper and is in good spirits. 6-Orchid Isle Horse Show at the Pana’ewa Equestrian Center (Sun., Aug. 25; 9 a.m., Pana’ewa): Horses are truly beautiful creatures and this weekend you can admire them during the Orchid Isle Horse Show at the Pana’ewa Equestrian Center. Learn more on FB here.

7 -Brother Noland at The Blue Dragon Tavern (Sun., Aug. 25; 6 p.m., Kawaihae): Brother Noland is an impactful player in Hawaiʻi’s music scene and one of Hawaiʻi’s most respected artists. He’s a multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winner, including Best Reggae Album and most recently the Slack Key Kiho’alu Legacy Award in 2018. His music is featured in several movies including “Pineapple Express” and “Snakes in the Plane.” See him in Kawaihae this Sunday for $15 in advance or $20 at the Blue Dragon Tavern. 8-Open Mic Night at the Hilo Town Tavern  (Mon., Aug. 26; 7:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m., Hilo): Head to the Hilo Town Tavern for Open Mic Night every Monday Night and see some of the island’s top acts. From comedy to live music, Open Mic is always a good time. Learn more here.

9-Haluluikeihiokamalama: Creativity & the Divine Feminine Workshop Series (Tue., Aug. 27; 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m., Hilo): Embark on a transformative journey with Kekuhi Kealiʻikanakaʻoleohaililani in the ‘Imiloa’s Haluluikeihiokamalama series. This is the first workshop in this series, “Haumeakalani,” and coincides with August’s Sturgeon Moon, a unique seasonal blue supermoon, and delves into the profound energy that shapes island consciousness. Learn more here.

10-Free YMCA Fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association (Wed., Aug. 28; 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., Hilo): Join Harriet for Zumba Gold & Andrea for Cardio Soul Line Dancing. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Refreshments provided. Event is free. Donations accepted. Learn more on FB here.
