The Best Upcoming Big Island Events: Thursday Aug. 1 to Wednesday Aug. 7

Happy August everyone!

With the summer officially wrapping up and the school year coming in this week, there’s still plenty of great activities and fun events to participate in before it’s too late.

Whether you’re ready for some live music, food, or dance, we have your list of must-sees for the coming week.

And if you have any events you’d like to see on our list, make sure to add them to the official Big Island Pulse calendar.

1- Can’t Even Comedy Show at My Bar in Kona (Thur., Aug. 1; 8 p.m., Kona): MY BAR KONA is hosting this comedy event including new comics Gabe Davis from Comedy Central, Caitlin Benson, and a bunch of local Hawaiian favorites to round out the lineup. Learn more here. Tickets are $25-$35.

2 -Trivia Night at the Pāpaʻaloa Country Store & Cafe (Thur., Aug. 1; 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m., Pāpaʻaloa): For the island’s Eastside residents, make sure to head to the Pāpaʻaloa Country Store & Cafe and participate in this multi-round competition that will challenge your group with categories such as history, science, Hawaiian culture, pop culture and more! 3-Free Dumpling Samples (Fri., Aug. 2;  4 p.m.-6 p.m., Hilo): Head to the KTA Puainako store this Friday evening for some free gyoza samples.

4-Kamalei Kawa’a Music at the Grand Naniloa Hotel (Fri., Aug. 2, 6:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m., Hilo): Maui native Kamalei Kawa’a, a GRAMMY Nominee and multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, who also appeared on Season 25 of NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ will be performing at the Grand Naniloa Hotel in the Crown Room this Friday. Enjoy an evening filled with Hawaiian music accompanied by hula performed by Hālau Ka Lehua Pua Kamaehu, followed by Island Reggae Music from Kamalei’s exciting new band, ‘Āinaty. All ages are welcome to attend this family-fun concert. Popular pūpū, full bar, and soft drinks are available for purchase before and during the show. Free self parking is available across from the Hotel at the Grand Naniloa Golf Club. Tickets range from $25-$240. Learn more here.

5-Abled Hawai’i Artist Collaborative (Fri., Aug. 2; 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Hilo): Join Abled Hawai’i Artists Collaborative (AHAC) artists for the 2nd Annual AHAC art opening at One Gallery on Hilo Bayfront. Donations accepted.

 6- Wandering the Borderlands ─ A painting exhibition by Pier Fichefeux (Fri., Aug. 2; 6 p.m.-pau, Hilo): Check out the latest exhibit at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center on Friday during the opening reception of this latest exhibit. Wandering the Borderlands is the expression and expansion of a language, an illuminated manuscript of Pier Fichefeux’s 40-year creative journey from France to New York to Hawai‘i. Full exhibition description can be found here.

7Wailoa Center ABSTRACT ONLY! Exhibit (Fri., Aug. 2; 5 p.m.- 7 p.m., Hilo): Head to the Wailoa Center in Hilo for the 14th Annual ABSTRACT ONLY! This year’s juror, Henry Bianchini selected 110 works from 70 artists from Hawai’i and beyond. Learn more here.

8-808 Day at Nani Mau Garden (Sat., Aug. 3; 4 p.m.- 10:30 p.m., Hilo): 808 Day is back this week at Nani Mau Garden in Hilo. Listen to bands such as Three Plus, Kapu System with Kanakamon & Small Axe, The Big Island Mix Plate Band featuring Ikaakamai, Ku’ulei Music, Damon Williams,Stephen & Pohai Henderson, Drew Daniels & Kamuflauge, Kanaka Fyah, DJ Hapa Boy and more!  Plenty of local vendors will be present. 9-Chili Dinner and Bingo (Sat., Aug. 3; 6:15-9:15 p.m., Pāhoa): Support your local veterans and enjoy some food and bingo this Saturday. $10 per person at the VFW Post in Nanawale/Pahoa – just follow the blue VFW signs once you turn into Nanawale.

10-The Voice of Hiroshima (Sun., Aug. 4; 1 p.m.-3 p.m., Honoka’a): This Sunday you can stop by the Honoka’a People’s Theater and be a part of this emotional story featuring an animated 1993 film “On a Paper Crane: Tomoko’s Adventure.” There will be a moment of silence at 1:15 p.m.

11-Free Lunch and Family Fest (Sun., Aug. 4; 10 a.m., Mountain View): Head to the Family of Faith Church for music, free rummage sale, games, face painting and more.
12-2024 Summer Party (Sun., Aug. 4; 4 p.m., Kona): Live music and art for a good cause is happening this Sunday at the Sanctuary of Mana Kea Gardens. Guests may provide a donation of $30.
12-Monday Night Jazz Jam (Mon., Aug. 5; 6 p.m.- 9 p.m., Hilo): Enjoy this weekly, all-inclusive Jazz Jam with a rotating house band. Free for all ages. Learn more here.
13- George Wit Live at Huggo’s (Tue., Aug. 6; 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Kona): Check out more live music on Ali’i Drive at Huggo’s hBar featuring local musician George Wit. Learn more here.

14-Community Garden Party (Wed., Aug. 7; 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Nīnole): Get in touch with nature and volunteer for a good cause at Rainbow Ridge Hawai’i. Join in the garden, listen to live music, and participate in a waterfall adventure.
