The Best Upcoming Big Island Events: Wednesday June 12 to Wednesday June 19

Father’s Day is coming up this weekend, reminding us all to recognize and give thanks to the male figures in our lives who embody the qualities of the protector, provider, and hero.  

With Father’s Day celebrations kicking off this coming Sunday, there will be plenty of chances to honor your father figures with dinners, live music, or even a BBQ at the beach.

1 – Ala Mon (Wed., June 12; 5:30-9 pm, Kona): Enjoy live music and hula against a picturesque sunset backdrop along Ali’i Drive with the tunes of Kona musician Ala Mon Wednesday night at Huggo’s on the Rocks. Learn more here.

2- Krispy Kreme Fundraiser (Thur., June 13; 12-6 pm, Kona): Head to the Regency Hualālai and satisfy your sweet tooth with some krispy kreme donuts to help support the Alzheimer’s Association. $20 donation will get you a box of the goodies. Learn more here.

3- Lā Mākeke Artisan Market at the Fairmont Orchid (Fri., June 14; from 9am-3pm, Kohala Coast): Shop oceanside and discover unique and handcrafted goods from a selection of Hawai’i Island’s artisans. Free parking available. Learn more here.

4 – Club Y2K 90’s-2000’s Hip Hop & R&B (Sat., June 15; from 9pm-1 am, Hilo): Dance to DJ NTU and DJ Debonair at the Hilo Town Tavern Saturday night. Entry fee is $5. 

5 – Hoʻolaulima Waipiʻo Valley (Sat., June 15; from 9am-3pm, Honoka’a): Explore Waipiʻo Valley with a hands-on, culture-based, highly educational volunteerism experience in the wahi pana (living, breathing space) of Waipiʻo Valley, located on the Hāmākua Coast of Hawaiʻi Island. Learn more here.

6 – The Mākaha Sons (Sat., June 15; 7pm, Hilo):  What better way to enjoy Father’s Day weekend than with a Mākaha Sons show at the Hilo Palace Theater? Show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $35 and $5 more the day of the show. Learn more here

7 – Ecstatic Dance with Odysseus (Sun., June 16;  10 am, Holualoa): The Holualoa Ecstatic Dance journey continues with a very special Father’s Day addition featuring one of the forefathers of the scene – Odysseus! Head to the Buddha’s Cup Coffee and dance alongside friends and family this Father’s Day. Learn more on FB here

8- 25th Anniversary Adoption Event (Sun., June 16; 11am-2pm, Hilo): Pick up a new furry friend with your dad during the 25th Anniversary Adoption event at the Petco in Hilo. All animals are fixed, vaccinated, combo. Learn more here.

9 – Father’s Day Blues Jam at the Kukuau Studio (Sun., June 16; 6-9pm, Hilo): Sit back, relax, and enjoy a free blues jam on Father’s Day at the Kukuau Studio in Hilo.

10- Dad’s Day Out with Horses (Sun., June 16; 3-5pm, Honoka’a): Start the evening with some of the following – softball, golf, tires, horses, ponies. Each game will have a prize for the winner including riding a horse, gift certificate and more. Cost is $60. Learn more here.

11-Talk to a Park Ranger: Unveiling the Wonders of Nature and Culture at Uēkahuna (Mon., June 17-, 10am-2 pm, Volcano): Join an engaging and lively 30-to-45-minute introduction to the summit on short, guided walk from the table at Uēkahuna. Times vary throughout the day starting at 10:00 a.m.  Free. Weather permitting. Learn more here.

11-Singles Evening with Horses (Tue., June 18, 3:30- 5pm, Honoka’a): Singles ages 30-45 are invited to this Honoka’a-based event complete with ice breakers with and without horses, laughter and dating. Learn more here.

12- “Bishop Mitsumyo Tottori Memorial Notebooks” (Wed., June 19; 11 am, Honalo): Dr. Jess Falcone, a sangha member who is Professor of Anthropology at Kansas State University, will be giving an educational lecture about Bishop Mitsumyo Tottori, a Buddhist priest in Hawaii who was not interned during WWII at the Daifukuji Soto Zen Buddhist Temple near Kona.
