Big Island Beekeepers Association (BIBA) June Monthly Meeting

This month we will be conducting a HYBRID meeting format! Both online via Zoom and in person at the Kamana Senior Center in Hilo (127 Kamana Dr., Hilo HI 96720). Doors and meeting link open/go live at 6PM Hawaii time, with presentation to begin at 6:30PM.

In observance with health and safety precautions, we ask that for our potluck at the Senior Center, if you bring food, please try to bring things in individualized portions. Please wear a mask when making a plate and do not gather too long around the communal food area. Utensils and hand sanitizer will be provided!

This month we have the honor of hosting Celia Davis, who will be presenting on the topic of “How Brood Communicates”. Please see her bio below for more:

Celia F Davis BSc NDB

After a life-long interest in insects, Celia’s life changed when she acquired her first colony of honey bees more than 40 years ago. Bees became an obsession and for many years she managed 14 colonies. These are now reduced to 2 at the bottom of the garden. She also has a passion for the countryside and gardening, studied agriculture at University and taught and lectured on various aspects of biology. An interest in photography developed when she married Cyril, who was a keen photographer and together they amassed a big collection of insect and flower images.

Celia has been involved in beekeeping education at all levels for a long time, has written 2 books on honey bee structure, behaviour and allied subjects and has held various offices in Warwickshire Beekeepers Association and served on the BBKA Examinations Board for 6 years. She is still lecturing and writing for various journals.
