Eli-Mac’s journey is a captivating fusion of musical influences and personal resilience. Born Camile Velasco in the Philippines and raised in Hawaii, she embraced rebellion by blending island rhythms with R&B and hip-hop—a signature style that blossomed after the success of her 2014 EP, ‘Dubstop,’ produced by JP Kennedy of The Green and Leslie Ludiazo of Hot Rain. Growing up in the ’90s, Eli-Mac soaked in a diverse palette of sounds from Lauryn Hill and Salt-N-Pepa to Wu-Tang Clan and Tupac Shakur, all while cherishing her parents’ eclectic music taste spanning disco, classic rock, and jazz. Her American Idol journey at just 18 was a pivotal moment, shaping her confidence despite the setback of elimination due to self-doubt—an experience that fueled her determination.
Breaking free from industry stereotypes, Eli-Mac rebranded herself in 2014, embracing a bold persona that authentically represents her true self. By blending reggae, hip-hop, and R&B, she carved a unique path with hits like “Can’t Get Enough” and “Résumé,” showcasing her collaboration with Tribal Seeds’ Louie Castle. Eli-Mac’s journey extends beyond music; she’s a vocal supporter of cannabis culture, symbolized in tracks like “Mr Sensi.” Honored with Hawaii Music Awards’ Single of the Year for her rendition of Bob Marley’s “Guava Jelly,” she’s shared stages with legends like Lauryn Hill and Sublime, embodying the spirit of her island upbringing and defying industry norms with each soulful performance.
