In the 1960’s in the Hawaiian islands, the surfers created the gesture that is now widely used worldwide, the Shaka. Make a fist and stick out your pinky finger and your thumb, then wave your arm side to side with a smile on your face, perfect, you have executed the perfect Shaka! When you drive around Hawaii-you may see people stick their arm out and “throw” Shaka, and that’s ok, it’s a good thing, I promise.
The Shaka has evolved into a greeting of positivity, a gesture of agreement, and a great pose for pictures. It is a perfect way to say thank you to a nice braddah or sista while driving if they let you go. In Hawaii, the Shaka is not just a gesture – it is a reflection of Aloha, the cultural embodiment of the Hawaiian people.
In recognition of its cultural significance and popularity, on Monday June 24, 2024, Governor Josh Green signed a new measure into law, making the iconic symbol the official Hawaii State gesture. This decision solidified the Shaka’s status as a symbol of unity and aloha spirit, representing the unique blend of cultures and values that make Hawaii so special. Whether you’re visiting the islands for the first time or are a long-time resident, the next time someone gives you a Shaka, remember its deeper meaning and embrace the spirit of Aloha that it represents. Whenever you can, spread the good vibes, the positivity, and the ALOHA and THROW ONE SHAKA!
